Great Eastern Pingo Trail
The Great Eastern Pingo Trail starts at nearby Stow Bedon, and provides a circular trail, making the Chequers an ideal place to visit before or after for refreshment and food.
Parking for the start of the Pingo Trail is at the A1075 at Stow Bedon, in the old railway station yard, a two minute drive from the Chequers. 
Pingos are circular ponds created during the Ice Age
Pingos were originally low hillocks which were formed around 20,000 years ago during the last ice age when water beneath the surface froze, pushing the soil up. During the summer thaw, the soil on the surface would sludge off and accumalate round the edges. When the ice finally melted, the hillocks collapsed leaving the shallow craters we see today.
The Pingo Trail is an eight-mile circular walk that takes in Thompson common, Thompson Water and the Village. Much of the walk goes through wooded countryside and wetlands, forest areas and parts of the ancient Peddars Way as well as open countryside.
